Not as simple as it may seem

Well, I'm sitting in front of the computer deciding what could I post as my first entry. Lots of ideas came to my mind: speaking about an ad, discussing a bit about wheather or not certain campaign would work best for a company. Yeah, right! There are lots of topics I can speak about, but I've realized I do have time to do that... Why not starting with something that can really introduce to what marketing is?
As I've passed through my, almost three, college years I've realized that people sometimes get the wrong idea on what you are planning or doing or will do someday within your major. Yeah, they say there are some careers that might seem more difficult than others, and they get to underestimate the real value of some of them.
I've seen that Marketing, as someday I'll be one of them, is one of these "undervalued" victims. People just don't understand that Marketing is not just about making TV ads and deciding whether if Britney Spears is more suitable than Christina Aguilera for a new campaign. Ok... all of it is part of Marketing. But there is lots of information and research behind these "simple" decisions.
Imagine you have to chose something as a present for your boyfriend (or girlfriend) without really knowing what he (or she) would like. Isn't that a very tough decision? So you don't just go out there to find some stuff without having some extra info, right? You would have to investigate a bit more on what are his (her) likes, dislikes, etc. You might have to go to ask some of his (her) friends, family or people the same age.
Well, Marketing is like this. I mean, you can just take the decision and do it... hoping you might have the "luck" of hitting the target or objective by a coincidence... but this is not what Marketing is all about. This is pretty much close to the concept some people have about it. Yes, that way seems very easy... Just go out and leave everything to luck and destiny. Who knows...
Marketing is getting to know your customer and to satisfy them as good as possible, with an autosatisfaction, also.In a different way as people might think, Marketing requires more than just creativeness. Research has to be done so you can get what you really want (Statistics and Mathematics), understand your people (Psychology and Sociology), see what happened (History), transmit your message (Communications). This is much more than the 8 letters MARKETING has.
